SVMES Club Expansion Update

Filed in Announcements by on 04/12/2017

Be a part of the biggest model railroad expansion in years!

Everybody, at one time or another, dreams of being a railroad baron. Now you, your family or business can be a part of the expansion of the Sioux Valley Model Engineers Society HO scale model railroad and museum.

The SVMES model railroad club recently received the donation of a 50-plus year HO layout, including a miniature circus complete with tents, acts and 40-car circus train. But the current 46 X 25 ½ foot layout at the W. H. Lyon Fairgrounds in Sioux Falls, SD isn’t large enough to accommodate the donated 14 X 24 foot circus and model train display. So plans have been drawn up and approved to add on to the current building.

That’s where you, your business or family comes in. The SVMES has embarked on a find raising campaign to find the more than $67,000 building only layout costs project. Once the necessary fluids are raised, construction can begin. Any and all donations will be appreciated, with special emphasis given to major contributors, such as having model buildings named after them. That way for generations to come you’ll be a part of the most entertaining and educational displays ever created. The SVMES is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit educational organization, so all donations are tax deductible.

South Dakota’s largest permanent public model railroad to get bigger!

The Sioux Valley Model Engineers Society HO model train layout, already the largest permanent public layout in South Dakota, will almost double in size. Truly a glimpse into both the past and present of railroading in the Midwest, it serves not only as a fascinating display for the entire family, but also a learning tool for youngsters about the importance

railroads made in the settlement of the countries’ midsection. Visitors can view how goods and services still flow in and out of the breadbasket of the world on rails.

Thousands of people each year visit the layout, during the Sioux Empire Fair and also both the Spring and Trains of Christmas open houses, but also throughout the year. School groups, daycare tours and even family reunions and other gatherings marvel at the miniature world that comes alive right before their eyes. Arrangements can be made to tour the facility anytime as club members delight in showing off their trains and layout.

The newest addition including a complete model circus just as it existed in the heyday of the traveling tent shows and a fully operating motor speedway, will join Mount Rushmore with operating fireworks and the sculpture of Crazy Horse with models of historic buildings from the 1800s right up to the present day. Long lines of freight and passenger cars will wind through rugged mountain hills and flat prairies, past towering wind generators, farms and cities big and small.

But for all this to become reality, we need your help raising the necessary money to build the addition. The 30 plus current members of the Sioux Valley Model Engineers Society have combined their talents to build the display and preserve those models built by others years ago. Now we’ve got to furnish an addition to the existing layout to include both new and future attractions.

Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated. Everyone making a donation will be remembered on a plaque prominently displayed in the new addition. Major contributors, corporations and businesses will be remembered by having their firms modeled and permanently displayed in the layout. Naming rights for the building itself are also possible.
